Website design has evolved from the early days of basic text, and what we
take for granted in “design layout”, did not even exist. High speed internet connections wasn’t even a term. HTML changed this; however in the early days, it was basic. Navigation, imagery and typography were still things of the (not too distant)future.
In the mid 90’s and early noughties, designers used table and column based layouts, with dancing GIF’s and flashing text. Then came the media heavy style sites with the use of Flash, and this also marked the beginning of visitor- focused design. CSS brought in greater creativity, which allowed the separation between content and design. With this technology, websites were easier to maintain, and quicker to load. Usability become the key focus over design elements.

Web 2.0 saw the growth of multimedia applications, social media and interactive content, and the internet evolved to be a multi-way information highway. This also sprouted the growth of Search Engine Optimization.
In today’s modern web design, the emphasis has shifted to User Experience. It is commonplace to have design features with infinite scrolling and one page design. The rise of the mobile web has changed the way we search for information, and has popularized the use of responsive website design. Responsive website design is still in its infancy, and I look forward to see how this develops over the coming years.
